Energency ExitEmergency Exit

L to R: Nick Taylor, bass; Ross Hurley, trombone, Jim Langabeer, saxes, flute, clarinet;
Bruce Morley, drums; Richard Singleton, trumpet, flugelhorn; Trevor Thwaites, vibraphone, percussion

A direct descendant of Bruce Morley’s Little Big band, EMERGENCY EXIT is a more co-operative venture, with a varied repertoire that now goes well beyond the original big-band-in-a-small-lineup concept, including everything from free-form improvisation to straight-ahead swing. All of the musicians take care of arranging/conducting/leading in turn, which also lends an informal feel to the group’s performance. While composers and arrangers such as George Russell, Shorty Rogers, Bill Russo, Quincy Jones, Neal Hefti and Bill Holman are still in the book, the band is also particularly proud of its “Kiwi content”, which features a large number of original compositions and arrangements from such musicians as Mike Nock, Alan Broadbent, Wayne Senior, Neil Dunningham and Stan Knecht, plus transcriptions from trumpeter Ivan Hunter, all giving the band a strong local flavour. The current players continue to add to the repertoire, with input from Jim Langabeer, Bruce Morley and Trevor Thwaites.
